10th Anti Tank Bn.

10th Anti-Tank Bn was added at Camp Swift as part of the added firepower the Division got before deploying to Italy.  Originally equipped with 57mm anti-Tank guns, this unit was frequently deployed as infantry once they saw combat in Italy.   If you can add to or correct this story, or can add information or a veteran’s story, please contact us via the form below.

10th Recon

10th Recon appeared and disappears, and re-appeared in the course of the Division’s history. Sometimes (incorrectly) called 10th Cav., the 10th Mountain Mounted Reconnaissance Troop was reportedly made up of men from the Mountain Training Command who wanted to deploy with the Division, and this was where they were assigned en mass. In Texas, they were trained in mounted operations, and apparently operated on horseback in Italy from time to time. Pretty good for a bunch of ski instructors and climbing instructors! If anyone can verify or deny this, please let us know, and we will add to the lore of 10th Recon.

10th Medical

The 10th Mountain Medical Battalion provided the majority of the medical support for the Division in combat. Battalion Aid Stations and Regimental Aid Stations were where the wounded soldiers received their primary medical care, before being evacuated to Collecting Stations, Field Hospitals and possibly the long voyage home.

Note the distinctive helmet markings not seen in any other unit.

110th Signal
110th Signal Company handled the communications tasks for the Division. From phone lines to radios, signal lamps and more – these guy’s “talked it up” in combat!

126th Engineers
The tramway builders – the ones who made it possible to go from the top of the mountain to the bottom – without skis – in 4 minutes!
